West Lincoln’s Age Friendly Advisory Committee (WLAFAC) is focused on making our Township an age-friendly community.

We provide input and suggestions to Township Council and staff on related initiatives and organize events and workshops to connect and support older adults and caregivers in our community.


2026 Events

Seniors' Active Living & Information Fair | September 16

When: Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 10 AM to 2 PM

Where: West Lincoln Community Centre, 177 West Street, Smithville

  • 50+ storefronts, including 2 blood pressure clinics (see list below)
  • Refreshment lounge and healthy lunch
  • McMaster Research Art Installation
  • 1 guest speaker and 6 sessions/demos/workshops (see schedule below)

10:15-10:45 AM Tai Chi Demo: Watch a demonstration of a lifelong activity that develops balance, builds strength and supports coordination and cognitive improvement.

11:00-11:30 AM Guest Speaker: Two Lenses on Informal (Family) Caregiving by Dr. Larissa Zwar, Assistant Professor & Canada Research Chair, Lifespan Research Institute, Brock University

11:30-11:55 AM Performance Mobility: A short presentation on stairlifts focusing on 'Stay in the Home You Love' highlighting their affordability and safety.

12:00-12:25 PM Core and Strengthen Active Demo: A supportive session that enhances your balance, strengthens your core and promotes better mobility for everyday life.

12:30-12:55 PM Motion and Memories (Sit & Cycle Demo): Move your legs using an elliptical-style machine while sitting. This low-impact pedaling engages the legs and ankles with minimal strain on the knees and hips.

12:30-1:45 PM Brain Health Workshop: Join a fun and informative Brain Health Workshop from Baycrest Academy for Research and Education to learn about brain health and aging. Participants can also take a free Brain Health Assessment, ask questions about their results, and receive personalized tips. To take the assessment, participants should have basic computer skills, be 50–85 years old and be able to read and understand English. Please bring your glasses if needed and arrive five minutes early to set up on the provided laptops.

1:15-2:00 PM Mah Jongg Learning & Demo: Watch a demonstration and learn to play this traditional four-player game of skill, strategy and chance.

The Township of West Lincoln and its Age Friendly Advisory Committee acknowledge and thank the Government of Ontario for the funding provided to the Older Adult Centres’ Association of Ontario for the implementation of the 2025 – 2026 Seniors Active Living Fair project.

Seniors' Health Seminar | June 12

When: Friday, June 12, 2026, from 1 to 3 PM

Where: West Lincoln Community Centre, 177 West Street, Smithville

Two special guest speakers shared their expertise on topics that support healthy living for older adults.

Speaker 1: Dr. George Ioannidis, Deputy Director at Geras Centre for Aging Research, presented about gait speed as the new “sixth sense” and a power indicator of health.

Speaker 2: Lorraine Hulley, Executive Director at Rose Cottage Community Hospice, presented strategies for talking with your doctor and advance care planning.

Meetings are held the first Friday of every month, at 9 a.m., in the Council Chambers located at the Township Administration Building at 318 Canborough St.

The Committee may have a maximum of 12 voting members. Meetings are open to the public and guests are encouraged to attend.
