Township of West Lincoln staff joined Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) staff and volunteers to plant 800 trees along Twenty Mile Creek, in Smithville, on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Trees planted included 13 native varieties: Basswood (100), Black Willow (50), Bur Oak (50), Eastern White Cedar (50), Freeman’s Maple (50), Meadow Willow (50), Nannyberry (100), Pussy Willow (50), Silver Maple (50), Swamp White Oak (100), Sycamore (50), Winterberry (50) and Yellow Birch (50).

This project represents the Township’s partnership with Trees for All, NPCA’s collaborative program aimed at significantly contributing to Canada’s goal of planting 2 billion trees and enhancing the ecological health of the Niagara Peninsula watershed.

Saturday’s tree planting, located behind Creek View Drive, will mitigate flooding, expand tree cover and provide native Carolinian habitat. The Township and NPCA would like to thank all of the volunteers who came out to help plant each tree carefully by hand.

The planting area will be left to naturalize. Overall health and growth will be monitored and assessed at year 2, 5 and 10 post planting.

Quotes

“This initiative is a wonderful example of how we can work together to create a more resilient and sustainable community. These new trees will enhance local biodiversity and strengthen our natural defences against flooding and erosion. Every tree planted today contributes to a healthier, greener tomorrow.”

Gerrit Boerema, Director, Growth & Sustainability

“This tree planting showcases the power of partnership and community action in nurturing both our environment and our well-being. Together with the Township of West Lincoln, NPCA Trees for All program, and our dedicated volunteers, we’re growing more than trees - we’re growing a healthier, more connected watershed in West Lincoln. Every hand that planted today helped strengthen the roots of our shared future.”

Natalie Green, Director Watershed Strategies & Climate Change
