With back-to-school season upon us, the Township of West Lincoln is reminding residents to slow down, drive safely and be mindful of traffic calming measures implemented by the Region to improve community safety.

The community safety zone located on Townline Rd. (Regional Rd. 14), between Canborough St. and Harvest Gate, was among those identified by Niagara Region for speed limit and signage changes. New and improved signage was installed in August, lowering the speed limit in front of Smithville Christian High School from 50 to 40 km/hr. This is a full-time speed reduction, effective at all times of every day.

The automated speed enforcement camera at this location will also be activated in September. These measures are part of Niagara Region’s Vision Zero plan, which is aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and injuries on the Regional road network.

The community safety zone located on Station St., between Spring Creek Rd. and West St., does not meet the criteria for a speed limit reduction. The maximum speed limit in this location remains at a consistent 50 km/hr, with significantly increased fines for speeding and other traffic offences.

Students will be returning to school soon, meaning streets and sidewalks will be busier with vehicle and foot traffic. All drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert and be patient, especially near crosswalks, school zones and bus stops. Every extra second you take to drive safely helps ensure children, families and neighbours get to where they need to go safely.
